What is Family Business Governance?

Family businesses are special sort of corporates that are established and managed by successive generations of a family. They have their own type of leadership and management challenges, whether they are publicly listed or not. There have been proposed models addressing governance of this type of corporates, in terms of formation of management boards, distinguishing between belonging to the family and share in the company or management responsibilities, succession planning, disclosure and transparency, and several other aspects. One of the well established governance models is the Family Business Governance Handbook from IFC (International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group), which can serve as both a guidance for family business governance, and a model for assessing and improving maturity of business governance.
